Essential Oil Droppers: How Inserts Really Work for Your Product

You want your products to reflect quality, design, service and professionalism. In fact, the smallest detail can be a faulty product that leaves customers unhappy with your brand -- and, *poof*; they're no longer customers. You disappeared from their story.


But when you invest in the details, you invest in your brand. Start by choosing the right dropper insert to make your packaged essential oils the perfect detail of a consumer's life. From an early morning refreshment to a more restful sleep, your essential oils should be the little detail that really makes them happy.


How dropper insertion works:

Dropper Cap Assembly Dropper inserts are suitable for rigid containers, including rigid plastic and glass dropper bottles. Since you can't squeeze glass containers, droppers are a popular alternative. However, essential oils can attack the rubber in the pipette.


This is where the essential oil dropper insert comes in. Dropper inserts are more than just orifices for essential oils. Dropper inserts are designed with 4 (or more!) elements to provide a better user experience than orifice reducers for essential oils.


There are two main styles of dropper insertion: horizontal and vertical. Both inserts have a liquid outlet and an air inlet, and both share the common element of a better dispensing experience than a simple orifice reducer. Once you've decided on your preferred style of dropper insert, you're ready to start filling. The components you need are: Dropper Insert, Dropper Bottle with 18 DIN Neck, and 18 DIN Dropper Cap.


Hats come in four styles. But, for the sake of discussion, let's use one of the most popular styles: the tamper-resistant cap.


Here are the steps to test the fit of the package:


Fill your bottle with essential oils or oil blends.

Start by inserting the dropper with the long tube into the bottle.

Press the top of the dropper insert so that it is flush with the rim of the bottle mouth. You will feel a little pop when the insert is attached to the bottle.

Unscrew the bottle's tamper-evident cap, which will seal the bottle so it's ready for the consumer.

Once consumers unscrew the cap, the tamper-evident seal is broken. However, the dropper insert will stay in the right place in every application.


Determine the flow rate of the dropper insert:

To provide your customers with the best oil experience, you should optimize your dripper selection for each oil for the best flow rate. Dropper inserts are very effective for controlling the flow of liquid in the bottle. When properly inserted, droplets will begin to flow within 3 seconds of placing the bottle upside down or tilted.


If the product does not start to flow in about 3-5 seconds, or - once it does flow - the droplets take longer than 3 seconds to dispense, then the surface tension of the product or the viscosity of the product may come into play.


Change the dropper selection to increase or decrease the flow rate to provide the best experience for your clients.


Choose a larger liquid outlet (orifice size) to increase droplet flow or handle thicker products.

To reduce flow or handle lower viscosity products, choose a smaller orifice size.

In addition to liquid orifices, different air orifice sizes can be selected to increase or decrease the flow of droplets.

Considering how the viscosity of each essential oil blend varies, you will need to experiment to find the perfect flow rate.


Essential oils with thinner viscosity include tea tree oil, orange, lemon, eucalyptus, lime, cypress, ginger, lavender, peppermint, and wintergreen. For these, you can choose a smaller orifice.

Oils with higher viscosity include vanilla, patchouli, cedar, vetiver, clary sage, jasmine saba and ylang ylang. These oils are best for larger orifices.
